Why I Started Vitaminis: From Busy Mom to Founder of a Better Way to Get Your Vitamins
If you had told me a few years ago that I would be building a nutrition brand, developing products with food scientists, and working to get little bottles of vitamins onto store shelves across the country, I might not have believed you.
But looking back, I can see how everything in my life led me to start Vitaminis.
I'm Leslie Danford, founder of Vitaminis, mom of four, lifelong nutrition enthusiast, and someone who believes that taking care of your health shouldn't have to be complicated.
I started Vitaminis because I wanted to solve a problem I was experiencing firsthand: getting the nutrition my family needed was harder than it should have been.
And I had a feeling I wasn't the only one.
The Unexpected Beginning: A Pandemic, Three Kids, and a Big Idea
In 2020, like so many people, my life changed dramatically.
I had spent years building a career in business, consumer products, and beverages. After studying economics at the University of Chicago and earning my MBA from Harvard Business School, I worked in investment banking and eventually moved into the consumer products industry.
I loved my career. But when COVID hit, I lost my job in hospitality and suddenly found myself at home with three young boys. Before long, I would also discover I was pregnant with our fourth child.
Life was hectic, to say the least.
Between managing the kids, navigating the uncertainty of the pandemic, and trying to keep everyone healthy, I found myself thinking constantly about nutrition.
I've always believed that what we put into our bodies matters enormously. Good nutrition affects how we feel, our energy, our immune systems, and our long-term health.
But as a busy mom, I also knew that eating perfectly every day simply wasn't realistic.
I wanted an easy way to fill nutritional gaps for myself and my children. And I was frustrated by the options available.
Why I Didn't Want Another Pill or Gummy Vitamin
I had never been a big fan of traditional supplements.
Pills often made me nauseous. I didn't love swallowing them, and I wasn't always comfortable with the long lists of unfamiliar ingredients.
Gummy vitamins weren't much better. Many contained added sugar, and I didn't love the idea of teaching my kids that getting their vitamins meant eating something that looked and tasted like candy.
Powders required mixing, measuring, and remembering another step in an already busy routine.
I kept asking myself: Why isn't there a better way?
What if we could take the nutrition people need and put it into something small, delicious, convenient, and made with ingredients people could feel good about?
Something that didn't feel like taking a supplement at all?
That question became the foundation of Vitaminis.
From an Idea to a Real Product in Less Than a Year
I didn't have experience formulating nutritional products. But I did have experience in consumer products, a passion for nutrition, and a willingness to figure things out.
I started researching nutritional gaps, talking to other parents, and working with experts to understand which nutrients people were struggling to get through their diets.
I originally had gut health in mind, but with the pandemic making immune health a priority for so many families, I decided to begin with Immune Support.
We focused on vitamin C, zinc, and magnesium—important nutrients that support normal immune function and other essential processes in the body.
My vision was a small, ready-to-drink wellness shot made with real fruit juice, no added sugar, and no artificial preservatives.
Of course, having an idea and actually making a product are two very different things.
I worked with a food scientist to develop a formula that would deliver meaningful nutrition, taste great, and remain shelf-stable.
Finding a manufacturer was one of the hardest parts. Most companies could make either refrigerated wellness shots or larger shelf-stable beverages, but not the small, shelf-stable format I envisioned.
I contacted more than 75 manufacturers before finding one that could help bring Vitaminis to life.
There were countless moments when it would have been easier to give up or compromise on the product.
But I believed in what we were creating.
And in 2021, less than a year after starting the process, Vitaminis launched.
Building a Business While Raising Four Kids
People sometimes ask how I managed to start a business with three young children and a fourth on the way.
The answer is that I didn't have some perfectly organized master plan.
I took small steps, one after another.
I made phone calls during whatever quiet moments I could find. I learned about manufacturing, packaging, food science, regulations, and distribution as I went.
I made mistakes. I changed direction. I asked a lot of questions.
And I learned that entrepreneurship requires getting comfortable with uncertainty.
My background in larger companies had taught me the importance of planning and managing risk. But starting Vitaminis taught me something different: sometimes the biggest risk is not moving forward.
You can spend forever trying to make the perfect decision. Or you can take a thoughtful step, learn something, and keep going.
That philosophy has shaped the way I've built Vitaminis ever since.
Growing Beyond Immune Support
Although Vitaminis began with Immune Support, I always envisioned something bigger.
The goal wasn't simply to create another vitamin product. It was to make everyday nutrition easier for real people with busy lives.
As we grew, we introduced Gut Health, formulated with probiotics and fiber to support digestive health.
We also developed Daily Greens, a convenient way to get key nutrients associated with leafy greens, including vitamins A, D, E, and folate.
Each product addresses a different nutritional need, but they all share the same philosophy.
No added sugar. No complicated routines. Just convenient, delicious nutrition in a mini drink.
And while my own children inspired the company, I've come to realize that this problem extends far beyond parents and kids.
Busy professionals, students, active adults, and anyone trying to build healthier habits can benefit from making good nutrition easier.
From My Kitchen Table to Walmart Shelves
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that building a great product is only the beginning.
We initially launched Vitaminis online. But after working to grow our direct-to-consumer business, I realized that retail could be a powerful way to introduce more people to the brand.
When someone discovers Vitaminis on a store shelf, they can pick up a bottle, try it, and decide for themselves.
We began expanding into retailers including Fresh Thyme, Fruitful Yield, and Mariano's.
Today, one of the milestones I'm especially proud of is having Vitaminis Gut Health and Daily Greens four-packs available in more than 400 Walmart stores.
It's incredible to think about how far we've come from those early days of searching for a manufacturer and wondering whether anyone would buy our little bottles.
And we're still just getting started.
What Entrepreneurship Has Taught Me
Starting Vitaminis has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.
It's pushed me outside my comfort zone in ways I never expected.
I've learned to be more resilient, to trust my instincts, to ask for help, and to distinguish between responsible risk management and fear of failure.
I've also learned that progress rarely happens in giant leaps.
It's usually the result of hundreds of small decisions, conversations, setbacks, and breakthroughs.
Interestingly, that's exactly how I think about nutrition, too.
You don't need a perfect diet or a complete lifestyle overhaul to start taking better care of yourself.
Small, consistent choices can add up over time.
My Mission for Vitaminis
When I started Vitaminis, I was a mom trying to make life a little easier for my family.
Today, I'm building a company around that same simple idea.
I believe good nutrition should be accessible, convenient, delicious, and something people actually look forward to.
I don't believe supplements should replace a balanced diet. But I do believe they can help fill nutritional gaps, and that there is room for a better, more enjoyable approach.
My hope is that Vitaminis helps people make one small, positive choice for their health every day.
Because taking care of yourself doesn't have to be overwhelming.
Sometimes, it can be as simple as one little bottle.
Thank you for being part of our story. I can't wait to see where we go next.
